Buya Hamka, The Forgotten Father

This book managed to draw attention even from the beginning, middle, and end. Wrong writing. Feel the atmosphere of the child's longing for his father while reading this book. Interested from the beginning of part one, namely when Buya Hamka figure every after ashar prayer often receive guests at his home, and questioned their household problems to Buya Hamka to get advice from him. First about the issue of a wife who wants to divorce from her husband who married again without her knowledge, and vent a wife who cant stand the treatment of her husband is cold.

The Little Hamka

In this book uses the author's perspective, calling Buya Hamka with my father's call, but reviewed on this blog has been composed by using a third point of view, so the name Buya Hamka is written.

When Buya Hamka was child, less affectionate because both parents have divorced, when he still needs the affection of both parents. Hamka grew to love reading books and studying. When he was 13-14 years old, he had read the thoughts of Djamaluddin Al Afghani and Muhammad Abduh from Arabia. From within the country, he also knew the thoughts of HOS Tjokroaminoto, KH Mas Mansyur, Ki Bagus Hadikusumo, H. Fachruddin, and others.

In July 1924, when he was 15 years old, Hamka asked permission from the Innyiak Doktor (Buya Hamka’s father) to leave for Java. On the way back to Padang Panjang established Muhammadiyah School. At that time requires a teacher. Many received, but because Hamka didn’t have a diploma Hamka eventually refused to become a teacher at the Muhammadiyah school, which his own father co-founded him.

Finally, Hamka determined to wander while looking for knowledge. His purpose is to go to Mecca. Before he was 18 years old, more than seven months Hamka settled in the city of Mecca. While in Mecca, Hamka used to speak Arabic, even with fellow Indonesians living there. Hamka is keen to unleash his Arabic skills.

Hamka felt a very bitter pain in Mecca. To meet the cost of living so as not to endure hunger, Hamka worked as a clerk in a printing press. In the repository there are dozens of religious books. On the sidelines of his work from morning to evening, Buya Hamka took his time off to read various religious books. Starting from the lessons of monotheism, philosophy, tasawwuf, sirah, and many others. (P. 236)

Buya Hamka and proximity to her son

Once when Irfan was cool to read when he had entered the Isha prayer, Irfan lied to his father because he said he had prayed when not yet. "There are three conditions that must be possessed by people who like to lie. First, the person must have a steel mentality, bold, firm, and not hesitate to lie. Do not be like you. Second, not forgetful of the lies he pronounces. Third, must prepare the ingredients of lying words to protect the first lie ..... One thing you should know. People who always lie, over time the liar can no longer distinguish between lies and the truth that he said. Finally people know that he is a lie, then given the title of the liar. "Dad ended his advice.

An unforgettable story as well as being carried by a train to Padang Panjang is written in this book, when Ummi and her brothers were worried because Irfan and Aliyah never met. Initially fraudulent because after buying sugar cane, it turns his train goes far. (P. 28-34)

Buya Hamka is also good at martial arts and irfan is eager to learn martial arts on her father. Later told what Buya Hamka teach like exchanging stance, can help him later as an adult. Then Irfan learned martial arts from Uncle, and Dad asked his uncle to train the moves of self-defense only.
"Father knows of my temper and temperament, so it's not good to lower martial arts to attack and fight." (P. 55)

Buya Hamka’s Habits

One of Dad's habits, he willn’t stop reading the Qur’an before he gets sleepy. He will continue to read it for 2-3 hours. Therefore, Daddy can spend 5-6 hours a day just to read the Qur'an.

Hajj to Baitullah

The most profound impression is also written Irfan when Father, Ummi and Irfan go to Hajj pilgrimage. The three got a special quota as a gift from Pd. President General Soeharto. Departing aboard the Mae Abeto ship on the boat provides a means of playing karambol, ping pong, chess, cinema, swimming pool that never has water, also provides a prayer place, a mosque located on the second floor and can accommodate 100 male and female pilgrims . Towards maghrib played Quran recitation followed by adzan.

Told also when the journey will return to Mecca, finally Buya Hamka and family to take the path through the land, because Ummi traumatized on the plane that started shaken and entered the empty air.

In the course of going through the desert, Irfan Hamka wrote a very memorable story because when traveling through the desert must find two extraordinary events. First chased by a powerful desert cyclone. At that time there was no other word than dhikr mention Allah, "... and in the car there is the voice of dhikr 'Allah, Allah' done many people. The voice echoed in the car. Hearing sounds of dhikr heard by many people while in the car only four of us. Truly a miracle from God "Umar Arab youth from Bogor who became driver Buya Hamka speak.

Secondly, it happened when Umar drove the car while he fell sound asleep. At that Irfan surprised to fall asleep and immediately woke up by channeling the contents into the palm oil palina PPO brand. Umar instantly stepped on the brakes of cars that were doing with the speed of 120 miles per hour. The car does not stop immediately. Glides on fast, zigzags, and spins. The new car stops when the two right wheels get into the sand. Irfan feared that the car was not spinning, immediately tumbled, when Umar braked suddenly.

Learn from Ummi, Buya Hamka's wife

The story of Ummi's kindness, Buya Hamka's wife is written in this book. How patient and soul of his help to others. Father was once offered the rank of Major General Tituler by the Government through General Nasution. But Ummi rejects it, and advises that Buya Hamka to remain in Al Azhar Grand Mosque - more honorable before God, Kak Azizah's story mimics what Ummi suggested to Dad.

In addition, Buya Hamka has also been offered by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Prof. Dr. Mukti Ali became ambassador and full-powered in Saudi Arabia. But the simple and wise Ummi gave another view. "Angku Haji, the people are starting to bloom now. Dakwah increasingly vibrant it all starts from Angku Haji. In this mosque, what Angku Haji bina has radiated and loved people. Will all these new ones be left out and replaced with activities as ambassadors? As ambassador, almost every night Angku Haji should attend a banquet held by the ambassadors residing in Arabia. Then when is the time available for Angku Haji to study the Quran that has never been abandoned since childhood? When is the time to read and add to science? When is the time to run the science that Angku Haji gets from reading it? "Ummi conveyed his gaze to Dad.

Hearing the sight of his faithful friend, he sincerely and heartily accepted it. Even when Buya Hamka was arrested, Ummi became a strong man, and did not want to get the mercy of people. Ummi had come to the publisher's house to ask if there were any unpaid honorariums left yet Ummi asked, the publisher's owner said that, "Ummi, we got the accident, Buya's newly printed books were confiscated. Even above the printing press is also transported. Where we got the money. I hurry now. Ummi, this is alms money from me to buy rice."

Ummi who has self-esteem does not want to accept the gift, because the intention of his heart is to take the remaining honorarium. Along the way with Irfan Hamka, Ummi is like wiping her tears. Unexpectedly, there was a visitor to the house, giving money because his property was sold, and had promised a part for Buya. There is also zakat money, originally Ummi insisted on refusing the charity, but after several times explained with reasonable argumentation and understanding of religion that Ummi hold fast, finally Ummi can accept it.

Buya Hamka’s Resolute Attitude

When the MUI issued a fatwa forbidden its law for Muslims following the Christmas celebration together, the government objected to the fatwa. As opposed to the government, Father then took a firm stance, declaring his resignation from his position as Chairman of the Central MUI.

"We as scholars have sold ourselves to God alone. Scholars who have sold themselves to God, can not be sold to any party, "said Father firmly.

Sukarno said, "I want to die soon, Hamka willing to lead my prayer."

Moh. Yamin said, "When I die, please Hamka is willing to accompany me in the last moments of my life and take my body to my hometown of Talawi."

Pramoedya Ananta Toer, "I am more confident to send my future son-in-law to Islamization and religious study to Hamka, even though we are politically different."

Buya Hamka's works are lifted to the big screen like Under the Shade of the Ka'bah, and the Drowning of the Van der Wijck Ship. His most phenomenal work is Tafsir Al Quran 30 juz which he wrote in prison, called Tafsir Al Azhar.

Learn from Buya Hamka

"When I die, ask Hamka to be my imam."

The thrilling message came from Soekarno's speech, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia some time before his death. When the message was delivered to Hamka on June 16, 1970 when the President had turned a blind eye, Hamka thoughtlessly instantly came to meet expectations. Yet at that time everyone knew that in the period 1964-1966 Hamka was imprisoned on the orders of Sukarno for being accused of violating the Anti-Subversive Act of Pempres no. 11 of planning the killing of Sukarno. Indictments that never proved true. Hamka is even grateful that in prison he can complete a masterpiece that will always be remembered: Tafsir Al Qur'an 30 Juz which is named Tafsir Al Azhar.

Greatness of the figure of the full name of H. Abdul Malik Karim Abdullah is familiarly called Buya Hamka is really worthy of praise. To those who hurt him he did not hold a grudge. In addition to Soekarno, writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer had also been opposite to Hamka. Beginning in 1963, Buya Hamka got slander from two daily newspapers of the capital: Harian Rakyat and Harian Bintang Timur through an art-cultural space entitled Lantern led by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Two communist-style newspapers accused Hamka of plagiarizing Alvonso Care's French poet for his novel "The Drowning of the Van der Wijck Ship". This attack is continuously carried out due to Buya Hamka's opposite attitude to the PKI. Months of being badly dubbed in the newspapers - which resulted in his life and the family's mess - did not make Buya Hamka hate. He remained calm as if nothing had happened. Sincerity he proved through his willingness to guide a man named Daniel Setiawan when will learn Islam to marry named Astuti, who is none other than Pramoedya Ananta Toer sons.

The story of a wisdom-filled life is retold by one of his sons named Irfan Hamka. About the steadfastness of heart and faith, which is not wavered by circumstances. Even Buya Hamka did not hesitate to leave the position when his aunt tried to be weakened. In 1981 when the Indonesian Ulama Council, which was chaired by Buya Hamka, issued a fatwa for the Muslims to join the Christmas celebrations together, the government who objected to the MUI lifted the fatwa. Buya Hamka refused and declared his resignation from the position of Chairman of Central MUI on May 21, 1981. (About chronology of the resignation of Buya Hamka is not told in detail by the author of the book.)

Reading the biography of a great man who once owned this republic through the direct narrative of Irfan Hamka - who often accompanied his father on many occasions - I captured an intimate impression. Feeling familiar as if I was witnessing my own way of life Buya Hamka a winding.

The book begins with a preface by Taufik Ismail and ends by lines of Ratih Sang's poetry. Since this is a kind of biography of a character, I have no right to judge its contents. My most critical criticisms are typing errors. This book are worth it. Many pearls of wisdom in it.
